Phin Dripping Too Slowly? Fix the Flow

Start by removing physical blockages
If a phin drips too slowly, let it cool, empty it, and hold the clean filter toward a light. Check whether fine grounds or coffee oils block the base or press. Rinse and use a soft brush or the maker's recommended cleaning method. Do not attack tiny holes with a tool that enlarges or scars them.

Rebuild the coffee bed gently
Use a measured dose, level it with a light shake, and place the insert consistently. Do not tamp a gravity press. If using a screw press, avoid tightening it into a compressed puck.
Coffee swelling can push against the press if the chamber is crowded. Reduce the dose slightly or use a larger filter rather than forcing more near-boiling water into inadequate headroom. An overflowing chamber can scald; never lift or press a stalled brewer while it is full.
Set the phin on a level, stable, heat-safe cup. A tilted brewer can tip or spill near-boiling water and cause a scald. It can also direct water through one section while another remains saturated, creating slow overall flow and uneven extraction.
Grind coarser one step
Very fine coffee and abundant fines restrict the perforations and spaces between particles. Move the grinder slightly coarser, keep every other variable fixed, and brew again. Our grind-size guide explains how to record the test.
Do not jump from powder to gravel. A dramatic coarse adjustment can solve the wait while producing a thin, underdeveloped cup. The aim is steady flow and balanced taste, not speed for its own sake.
Check the pour and water path
Wet the bed evenly during the bloom, then add the remaining water without blasting one crater. A deeply disturbed bed can send fines downward and clog openings. Pour calmly around the surface.
Make sure the press perforations are not covered by a misplaced solid surface or stuck against the lid. Confirm that air can enter as liquid leaves; damaged or unusually tight-fitting parts may interfere with drainage.
Diagnose with a no-coffee water test
After cleaning and cooling, place the empty phin over a stable cup and test it with cool water. It should pass freely. This does not predict coffee brew time, but it reveals a physical blockage or assembly problem. If the empty filter barely drains, coffee grind is not the first culprit.

Taste before declaring victory
Stir the finished brew. If it remains bitter, astringent, or muddy after flow improves, test a slightly coarser grind, different ratio, or fresh coffee one change at a time. Darker roasts can taste intense even with reasonable flow; time alone does not explain flavor.
Keep a short log: filter, coffee, dose, water, grind, press method, and result. If the hot brewer stalls again, leave it in place until it cools rather than stirring, squeezing, or lifting it over the cup.
